Vern's old GTi

Here's the story of my '86 GTi 8v!

(Humm, let me think. Which one is more aerodynamic? The Scirocco is not lowered, and the GTi is....)

I bought this car in the middle of 1994 from a friend of mine. I really don't know why he was selling it, but I took full advantage of the situation. It came with Prime 5 spoke wheels. They were one of the first set that were polished. Man they looked good. If I can find the pictures of it I will post them. The engine had a few modifications to it. The cam was huge. The thing idled very rough, but it was one of the fastest 8v's around. The intake was replaced with something, but I am not sure what kind of intake was installed. The exhaust. Well it was definitly a different breed. All it had was a muffler, and that is all. No cat or first muffler. Man that thing breathed well. The springs had been cut (incorrectly) to lower the car. After having it for about 8 months I realized that the suspension was shot. Time for a transplant!!!! I bought a set of Eibach Pro springs, and a new set of shocks all the way around. As I pulled all this stuff out of the car I realized that the inner, and outer cv joints were trash. I actually found a better deal on half-shafts than on the cv's themselves. Also, I found that the front shocks were bent inward. Not a good situation. So out with the old and in with the new. With it's new ride height it rode much better. I actually had some suspension!!!! The sterio was rather large. It had 4 10" subwoofers when I bought it, and I changed those out with 2 12" subwoofers. The sound quality was much better with the 12's. It also had various mids and highs through out. The car was pushing somewhere around 500 watts. It ran quite well for a long time. I didn't have to do much to the thing. Then in 1996 on memorial day it got stolen. I was in Texas, and it was with my wife in California. When it was found, needless to say, it was gutted. I didn't have the money to buy a new car. So I was forced to fix it. I ended up putting about $1000 into the car. The same day I got the car back, my wife went down and put full coverage insurance on it. That was a good thing because no sooner had she got it back, someone (amateurs definitly) tried to steal it that night. They did get it around the corner, but we were not sure if they had gotten away. When the police arrived (my wife called them while it was being stolen) they found the car about 300 yards away from the house still running, and the drivers door wide open. The only reason that they didn't get away was because they didn't break the stearing lock. It could not have been the same people this time, because the first time it got stolen they were driving it away in about 45 seconds. This time they didn't get away with all the engine components like last time. So I got the car back. We then move to Arizona in Dec of 1996. It was out there for about a year, then the engine started to give out on me. It finally died in November of 1997. I ended up selling it to a really good friend for a steal. He put a few thousand dollars into it. Now if you see it don't mess with it. All the money went into the engine and transmition. It is fast.

Now for the next session in the story of the GTi. This session of the GTi story is not as nice. The GTi is (tear) dead.... My buddy sold the car to a friend of his. The guy ownened it for about 3months. He was traveling one of the bussiest and most dangerous roads in the area. One of the biggest problems of that area is the fog that accumulates during time of the year. He was driving in heavy fog, and didn't see the 18 wheeler in front of him. Well now you can see the result.
